[speed/latency] Massive network slowdown every morning after 2am

Every single night after 2am my computer slows down to a complete crawl. I'm in NE Maine. Anyone else experiencing this? Fairpoint has been fairly good for several months. No more red lights. But this is very maddening.

[availability] Noticed some fiber build-out in Maine

I was driving through South Portland/Scarborough on US 1 (south of the Maine Mall) and I noticed Fiber Optic lines (exactly the same lines used in FiOS buildouts in Mass) hanging from the poles along the way (only looked at them when I was stopped). Is this a sign that FairPoint might be brewing their own flavor of FiOS or upgrading their network. My Grandma lives in Biddeford and it would be nice to get FTTP at her house. -- I've experienced ImOn (when they were McLeod USA), Mediacom, Comcast, and Time Warner and I currently have DirecTV. They are much better than broadcast TV. I have not and will not cut the cord.

[speed/latency] DSL congestion

Ever since this Monday every day from 11:00- 3:00 and even times later at night my modem Westell 7500 has issues. Here is what I noticed. 1. DSL light flashes really fast then disconnects and says please connect a DSL line. 2. DSL disconnects and reboots and terrible speeds with 100-200 jitter and high ping, See pic http://www.speedtest.net/result/2683968067.png http://www.pingtest.net/result/80590105.png I just had fairpoint here to take a look and my connection was absolutely terrible so what he did was disconnect and reconnect now the speeds are normal how ever he did tell me there is congestion in the town that may be causing the bad performance issues. Fairpoint tech also told me that my connection is so good it is rated at 7.9Mbps how ever the highest stable connection is 6mbps to 6.5mbps but fairpoint only has plans for 3, 7, 10 and 15. Sigh Why can't I get 6? How come the public can't have the highest stable plan and just pay more money? Heck I'll pay for the 7 package just to get any thing faster then 280-305 kylobytes a second. Pings on Fairpoint DSL has been a terrible experience for me with netflix constantly buffering or game pings on world of warcraft, Battlefield 3 100-200 all the time. How can one reduce ping in my games and have net netflix not buffer every 5 seconds? I am the only one using my DSL 90% of the time how ever I do have a Netgear hub connected to it via Ethernet cord with 3 computers, 1 blue ray and 1 360 connected via the hub and 1 blue ray and 1 xbox connected via Ethernet to the router. Sure that may seam like a lot but at any giving time only one device is active

[connectivity] Unsure about RE-installing Fairpoint modem softwa

Hello, I want to connect my Westell DSL modem using a laptop (instead of my current tower PC). The PC is very old, and I'm afraid it could die on me any day. As mentioned, the DSL router is currently connected via Ethernet to my tower PC. The modem is bridged, and connected to a Linksys wireless router. After purchasing the Linksys at a yard sale, it took me months of online research (and no help from my Fairpoint ISP) to configure everything correctly. So, I'm scared to death of having to figure it all out again. I'm pretty sure that would mean running my ISP's modem software CD again on the laptop...? Surely it couldn't be as simple as plugging the Ethernet cable from the modem into the laptop and booting it, could it? Doubting it, can anyone tell me if I'd have to go through 'unbridging' the modem before, and reconfiguring the wireless router after reinstalling the modem software on my laptop? Thanks for your time. Tania

[modem/router] Want to ByPass the Fairpoint Security Update

I have a Westell 6100 modem that was provided by Fairpoint when we first signed up for DSL. I am having to reboot the modem several times a day because it stops accessing the internet periodically. I don't want to get another modem from Fairpoint, so I purchased an Actiontec GT701D several months ago. I had trouble connecting it initially.... couldn't get beyond the Fairpoint login screen. I have taken it out again for another try, and now it has successfully installed itself. My problem now is that now when I access the internet, I can't get beyond the Fairpoint message telling me I need to install a security update. To try to get beyond it, I downloaded the update and tried to install it. It failed, of course, since the modem isn't the modem the update expected to see. How can I get beyond that Fairpoint screen so I can access the internet again?? All systems are go as far as the Actiontec modem is concerned. It's Fairpoint that is putting up a block. I hope someone can help! Karen

[connectivity] fiber and android

About two weeks ago I had FairPoint install a 30/15 fiber connection. Although I experienced one outage, the service does perform generally as advertised, The two android devices in my household seem to be the exception; neither of them is able to access the internet. Computers and Roku receivers work well. The wireless router reports an excellent connection. The androids are able to access a web page on the local network. When I connect an android to an unprotected router in the neighborhood, I am able to get access. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? Thanks

My friend in Greenfield NH just started with FairPoint and would like to use his Netgear N300 Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router DGN2200v3. The installation genie doesn't work nor does the detect internet settings. The dsl light is solid green but the internet light is red (there was a brief period of green but it went to red when we opened a browser.) Can anyone help. We've used the following basic settings in internet page of the router. Yes to login ISP = PPPoE user name and password from Fairpoint entered service name left blank connection mode: always on Internet IP address = get automatically from ISP Domain name server address = get automatically from ISP NAT enabled Computer MAC address = get automatically from ISP thank you.

FairPoint problem affecting NH Verizon wireless customers.

Noticed this article today in local paper. http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/news/statenewengland/1011426-469/verizon-wireless-having-service-issues-due-to.html quote:Problems transferring calls from the cell phone network to the main telephone network has caused Verizon Wireless service to be unreliable in New Hampshire for the past few days, according to state officials. The problem has even affected 911 service. “There are occasions when someone would call, they’d get dead air,” said Wanda Bowers, public information representative for the Division of Emergency Services. The problem was first reported Friday afternoon and has shown up statewide, she said. It appears to be “random,” which means that it often goes away quickly. “If you get dead air, hang up and call again, and that may (go through),” she said. The problem results from a “trunking issue between FairPoint and Verizon,” she said. When signals are collected by cell phone towers, they are handled locally within the cell phone system’s network, but eventually must be handed off to the main telephone network in order to be connected with callers in other systems. That hand off, often called the “backhaul,” is an important source of income for wired telephone networks like FairPoint, but it can be complicated. Bowers said the issue has been isolated to a switch, the system which allows information to be passed from the cell-phone to wired network. The state is “working with the carriers” to solve the problem.

Chronic reboots required Comtrend AR5381u

Hello - I have been suffering with 1-4 reboots per day for months now. Sometimes I may be lucky to get through 1 or 2 days w/ out a reboot. But it's rare. Fairpoint has swapped out boxes, run line tests, etc. The probems of connectivity and the need for routine reboots persists. I probably have over a dozen calls logged. I've mostly stopped calling due to the lack of satisfaction I get from calling. Normally I just reboot the box because I'm looking for resolution not debug w their less then knowledgeable 1st level support staff. 2 days ago I logged a call and asked for a tech to come out. Yesterday a field tech who was very thoughtful came by and did more line tests back to the CO and also within my house. He felt I had one bad phone in the house (which I have removed), and thinks my alarm system may have a "poor signature". But in general the line integrity is demonstrating to be very good. I believe the issues are not necessarily at the physical layer. Tonight I had time on my hands, and so with the failure which occurred this afternoon I figured I'd spend some time debugging rather than rebooting it immediately. Here's what I found... My wan IP *was* ping-able by the support staff at Fairpoint. None of the devices which connect wireless had internet access. The DSL & PPP status were represented as working in the web screens. I had several thousand HEC errors on both up and down stream (this sort of points to line integrity which is confusing, or possibly bad hardware along the path. Maybe the Comtrend???) The DNS primary and back up were pingable. I was able to ping 8.8.8.8 I was not able to ping www.google.com This leads me to believe the DNS proxy fairpoint is using was failing to handle my requests properly. After rebooting and restoring internet connectivity, using the advanced screen I configured the DNS proxy to be disabled, but when I did that I lost internet connectivity. I don't understand the details of the proxy feature to know whether it can be by passed / disabled or not. It would seem not. Maybe in addition to disabling DNS proxy, I also need to point to a different DNS server???? If anyone has any positive *proven* experience and can offer specifics related to the AR5381u DNS screens I would appreciate it. I pressed and pressed and pressed for them to connect me to one of their operations team members who understands IP, but what I kept getting was "that group is not a customer facing group". NO SH!T, but when the customer is requesting help, and the existing support staff can't grasp the problem, I'd expect an escalation. I'm just about ready to switch over to timewarner cable... Can anyone offer me reasons to stay or suggestions on how to better isolate and fix this problem on my end since clearly the operations team at Fairpoint is unwilling. They ONLY want to send a field tech. The field techs do not understand IP. They ONLY understand the layer1 testing. Help, PAH-LEEEZE!!!

Constant bad latency/pings to game server

I am experiencing some pretty bad latency/ping on a game server for the past week or so. This game server is located in Virginia, which is just 4 states below me. Hey guys, I just replaced my Westell modem b/c we were having problems with it. It's been replaced with a Comtrend modem. Just wondering if anyone is familiar with this modem? I want to see my stats, like margin and if we been having any disconnects? Also, I was wondering if my data path would change with this new modem? We had Fastpath before and I don't want to get switched to interleave b/c I like the lower pings for gaming. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey , why do people say Fairpoints trash? in my area which is in Langdon , NH the DSL connection is reliable. i get 1.5Mbps download and Dial-up-ish Upload which is what is paid for. but sometimes it does get slow to the point Youtube won't work which is odd. i wonder if Fairpoint throttles or filters during certain parts of the day?

My data path was always fast path and they switched our blade out my way to interleave and my latency has now doubled :( Really sucks b/c I play a lot of first person shooter games and latency is very important. I have good line stats, line attenuation is always around 37 and my margin is usually around 20. Any idea how to get them to switch me back? Most the techs I talked to are clueless about what data path is, very frustrating. Btw, I'm on 3 Mbps plan and my speeds are always there.

[modem/router] Fairpoint won't tell me my IP !

I've had Fairpoint DSL for 3 months now. I mainly have DSL to facilitate webcams to monitor my property in Maine when I am not there (which is most of the time as it is a summer property). I have dynamic IP as Fairpoint won't sell a static IP to a residence. Now the IP has changed and they won't tell me what the new IP is, thus rendering remote viewing of the webcams, or remote access (which I setup) on the router impossible. When I had Premium Choice they would tell me what the IP was when it changed, which was only once in three years. Fairpoint has changed my IP twice already (once I was up there so I had no problem). How can I find my new IP? My only hope is one of the webcams was set to send me emails, but as far as I can see the ip isn't embedded in the sender info. needless to say I am not happy with Fairpoint at all. Their support is useless. If I can't get my ip I have no use for their service.

[modem/router] ComTrend CT-5072T Modem into Bridged Mode?

$

Hello, I'm posting here regarding an issue that I'm having with what I believe is my modem in hopes that somebody will be able to point me in the right direction, or possibly explain something to me in case I have it all wrong. The problem I'm having is with a few games I play, most notably Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty 4. While both of these programs do work, the server lists in both games are often rather small and in MW2 my NAT is listed as "Strict" as opposed to "Open". A problem also arises with any servers I try to host, such as a private 2v2 Call of Duty 4 (CoD4) server and a small private Team-Speak 3 server, both of which I was able to host perfectly when I was with my old ISP. (Note, these are not LAN servers, I intend them to be accessible from the Internet, and right now they aren't accessible at all.) In order to try and solve these problems I was first logging into my new router (a Western Digital N600) thinking that perhaps it was blocking ports or connections. Well, after countless attempts to open ports and allow programs, I took the router totally out of my network and plugged the single computer directly into the modem. I was shocked to see that I was still experiencing all of the same problems. Next, I realized that it could be my security software (Microsoft Security Essentials), so I promptly disabled the Firewall and tried again to no avail. So, now believing it is the modem, I began looking into what it could be. After hours upon hours upon hours of research, I came across the term "Bridge mode" and realized that (to my understanding) I could place the modem into bridged mode and have my router (the Western Digital N600) handle all of the NAT and PPPoE settings instead of the Com-Trend modem. I have done some checking and I believe that my modem is in fact acting as a router AND a modem as my IP address is different on each side of the modem. (I have checked using /ipconfig in Command Prompt and http://www.whatsmyip.org/) To my understanding, if the modem is bridged then I could set my N600 router to handle some other things (the PPPoE I believe) and let the modem strictly do the talking to my ISP. Armed with new knowledge, I called an internet tech with Fair-Point and he too agreed that the modem should be placed into bridged mode. However, after nearly an hour on the phone finding the default gateway (which I already knew) and trying to access the modem, we were still unable to even log into it. We tried countless username/password combinations and eventually it got to the point where he said there was nothing more he could do if we couldn't get into the modem. After this, I was contacted by another tech who simply said that the Com-Trend modem is strictly a (and I quote) "pass-through device, it doesn't block ANYTHING. Any problems you are experiencing must be elsewhere." After calling the 2nd tech back and speaking with him, I was told that once again that the modem doesn't block anything and that any issues I'm experiencing simply can't be in the modem. I explained to him how I believe the modem could be put into bridge mode etc etc etc, and I was countered with the response, "nothing inside the modem is bridged. If all you want is for it to be changed then we would have to give you a static IP address and even that wouldn't change anything, plus it would make your bill go up, so I really don't think you want that. Your problem is somewhere else, it isn't in our modem." So here I am. What can be done about this? Will I just have to live with these issues? Could I possibly have anything else that is restricting the access I need? Can my modem be put into bridged mode? If it is placed into bridged mode then will I need to have a static IP address? Can't I just have my real router (my Western Digital N600) handle any features that would be disabled by placing the modem into bridged mode (thus not need a static IP address)? Thank you in advance to any and all responses I get, and sorry about such a long post, but I'm nearing the end of my patience by not getting a straight answer.

[trouble] Comtrend AR-5381u No way to change default Username/Password

Hi everyone, I just got a new Comtrend AR-5381u wireless modem from FairPoint Vermont to replace my old Westell 7500 wireless that had issues. After receiving the Comtrend the first thing I wanted to do was change the default Login Username and Password however the option is not available in the comtrend's UI. After doing some google research and checking the modems manual it appears the option should be there. I also want to note the manual also shows that I should have access to the router log files but again the option is missing in the UI. There is actually several options missing! I called FairPoint and talked to several different people and I could not get a straight answer as to why the options are not their. In the end I was told its just the way it is. Now I won't get into any long drawn out details but using firefox and my developer tools I logged into the router and was able to view the source code. Upon checking the code I found the options I am missing are there but not being displayed on screen. According to the Comtrend manual this modem has different user levels depending on how you login. It appears there is either Admin access or User level access with limited options that can be changed. I have to assume FairPoint gave me User level credentials and this is why I do not have access to some features like changing the default username and password. I asked them about this but again they seemed lost. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have a default username and password that grants admin level access? Maybe I am paranoid but I think its is SOOOO Wrong that I do not have the ability to secure my network. By not having the option to change the default username and password doesn't this represent a major security hole?
