I have 10 email addresses with Fairpoint. I noticed yesterday that my phone wasn't receiving any emails (IMAP) from Fairpoint. Doing some checking, I found that it was unable to access the Fairpoint email server on any of my 10 accounts. I disabled security (STARTTLS) which I have used since I started with Fairpoint (probably 7 years ago, and I have several mobile devices, along with a Windows desktop and a Linux netbook) and then found I was able to get my email. So today I called Fairpoint tech support (lol) and asked about it. She didn't understand much about it so I asked her to speak with a higher level support person. She didn't transfer me, but spoke to that person herself, and told them everything I had said. She said that person told her that Fairpoint doesn't support STARTTLS. I told her (as I had explained several times previously) that I had been using STARTTLS security for years, on 3 phones, a tablet and Windows and Linux computers, but she said that the higher level tech support person insisted that their servers do not support STARTTLS. I tried to ask how long since it wasn't supported but all I got was "we're sorry, Mr. (B)." So I persisted, saying "sorry doesn't answer my question; since how long ago do you not support STARTTLS, since I have used it for years?" Same answer was given. I said "you are side-stepping my question, please answer it." Same thing. I was also told that the higher level tech person said no changes have been made to their servers. Going to ssl-tools.net just now, I see that indeed "@myfairpoint.net" does not support STARTTLS or apparently any security protocol (STARTTLS was the only one that ever did work anyway). So now I must change the settings for 10 accounts, outgoing and incoming, on 5 different devices, not to mention having no security, which is nice to have especially when mobile on open WiFi connections which I sometimes use. STARTTLS used to work until yesterday, so they did support it. I'm not happy, especially with their refusal to give me the truth.
