Hello, Having a router problem.
My Second Westell 7500 when I plug my eathernet cable directly into it says my connection cable is broken and when I look behind the PC the light for the eathernet is not on how ever if I plug it into my Netgear switch it works fine.
What could be the issue? I have tried resetting the router to its defaults and I can't access it.
I am currently using my switch connected to my first westel 7500 and it works fine but the second westel is no longer allowing me to even connect to it and keeps my network light off.
I need to set the second westel as a switch / hub

[connectivity] Shocking service
I just migrated a Business customer from TWC to DSL. They were paying too much money for what they were using, I suggested Fairpoint for prices and they were cheaper in the long run.
I wanted to pass along my experince with Fairpoint.
Tech installed the DSL line, it was a 4port sr100 modem, in nat/firewall mode.
I called to have modem put in bridge mode, someone from the local office called me back and gave me the steps.
The customer is on 5x1 connection, getting 5 and 1 at all times. I have PfSense in the mix emailing me when things go wrong. All in all a good experince.
Would they like faster...yes
Do they NEED faster, honestly no.

[trouble] Power light is red
I have had my comtrend ar-5381u wireless ADSL2+ router for a while now and yesterday the light under "power" has gone red and no other lights will come on. I have no internet access whatsoever wired or wireless. If there is a way for me to fix this without having to send it in, please let me know.

There is an internet outage causing DSL to lose authentication, and causing FAST Internet to be very very VERY slow.

[speed/latency] Poor Netflix performance on FairPoint FAST - time to switch?
Netflix performance in the evenings via my FairPoint FAST 30/15 Mbps fiber connection has gotten really bad lately - some evenings my Roku can't even sustain a 1.6 Mbps connection. All tracerts through cogent.com show high latency. Is it time to switch to Comcast?

Attainable rate vs actual rate?
Hi all,
I've recently picked up FairPoint DSL. I'm at a fair distance from the CO (~3.5 miles) and have only recently qualified for service after years of waiting. I was told that I was only able to get 768/128 service here and that's effectively what I'm showing on the modem (Modem shows 911/150 to be exact). What I've noticed is that my attainable rate seems to be very consistently in the low two thousands down and between 450/500 up.
It's my (somewhat vague) understanding that with other carriers, Verizon for instance, they run an 'optimizer' that will move the service speed up to the functional limit on the specific circuit. Is that the case with FairPoint? And if not,is it likely that I'd get any traction if I called them and said that I was showing a higher attainable speed so could we take a shot at 1.5/256?
And don't get me wrong, I'm happier with the current service than with no service at all but I'd very much like to squeak a bit more speed out of it ;')
Thanks very much for any thoughts,
Dan

We need to start complaing to FairPoint again...
For the past 3 weeks now every single night starting at 6PM EST my pings become absolutely atrocious when getting peered through both Cogent and Above.net. This is absolutely unacceptable for the price I am paying.
I basically can't do anything after 6PM, which is the time when I am most active on the internet for gaming. I can't even stream internet radio which only uses like 5kb of bandwidth. Gaming is impossible since with the lag I am rubber banding like crazy or actions in the game take forever to respond.
It's taken me forever just to get to this forum to post this.
This has been my usual tracert for every single night these past few weeks happening on both Cogent and Above.net:

[speed/latency] Random disconnects and packet loss.
I've had Fairpoint for around 2 years now, and been using it on this gaming computer for almost a year. It has worked fine, with outages only during storms or maintenance. All the sudden, it started disconnecting intermittently. At first it was just disconnecting and then coming back on a couple minutes later.
This morning I was playing a game and would randomly spike up to 1000ms for a split second every minute or so. After I disconnect just now I ran a pingplot and these were the results.
I asked someone else in the house if they had any problem, they are connect wirelessly and I am wired. They said they didn't notice any service interruptions. Could this be my computer, the cable, or something odd with Fairpoint itself?

Changing Landline Phone Number
Hello - I'm just wondering if anyone knows what is involved in changing one's landline phone number as a Fairpoint customer, and the cost.
I did call Fairpoint (tech support) today, but was informed that the department that could help with this is closed on the weekends.
I hope to have an answer before Monday.
Thank you.

Comtrend AR-5381U -- can't disable remote administration
Folks,
Running a Comtrend AR-5381U router from Fairpoint. On this router, the
external/remote administration interface is always enabled. The first
Fairpoint service rep indicated this wasn't appropriate, but kicked it
up a level. That next rep said it was to allow Fairpoint in to service
the router (this was a voice-mail message; I did not have opportunity
to discuss this).
Seems like a poor idea to me. My previous router explicitly states
"With Remote Administration enabled, your network will be at risk from
outside attacks."
If anyone knows how to disable remote administration on this unit, the
instructions would be appreciated.
Another comtrend AR-5381U (white case), had remote administration
disabled by default. My AR-5381U (black case) has no mechanism to
disable remote administration as far as either I or the Fairpoint
service rep could tell. The service rep indicated a distinction
between black case and white case units.
Maybe someone here has further insight into this?
The upper-level Fairpoint service rep offered to swap for a router with
no wireless capability (seems like a downgrade).
Thank you.

[speed/latency] Speed keeps slowing down
Hello,
I have the 3 Mb plan which has been working fine for the past year (before that the line was on the 768k plan for about 8 years). For the last month or so the speed has slowed down quite a bit. A modem power cycle always brings back the 3mb speed, but it will eventually slow down again.
Yesterday I noticed a ton of static on the land line...after which the dsl speed dropped. I replaced the filter for that phone and it seemed to fix the static issue and subsequent phone calls didn't slow down the dsl speed. I was hoping that would fix my issue...however I woke up this morning to a slower speed again.
Could y'all check my stats and let me know what I should try next (ie should I now replace the filter on the answering machine and dvr phone line?)?
Stats with slower speed:

It's that time of the year again!
For the usual FairPoint and routing silliness to appear.
I am using the 30/15 FAST (fiber optics) package.
Past 3 weeks now every single night from 5PM to 8AM this is the occurance. Download/upload speeds drop to about 250kb/s download and anywhere from 10-50kb/s upload. This is a usual tracert, one of the better ones. Usually pings from hops 3 and onwards start at close to 300ms and get progressively worse.

Rumor: FP to offer bonded ADSL2+ service soon
I was on a service call and was speaking with a FP line tech who I know somewhat well. He told me that FP is going to be rolling out bonded ADSL2+ service soon. Not sure what soon means. He saw paperwork at the office describing the service and probably also how to install it. I believe it will only be offered in towns where the CO is equipped with an Adtran TA5000 DSLAM. (same equipment used for their Ethernet over Copper service, if I am not mistaken)
How one would figure out if they are served from a TA5000-equipped CO without asking a local tech, not sure.

[service tier(s)] Separating Fairpoint FAST Internet from phone
I originally had Verizon FIOS and landline.
When Fairpoint took over several years ago, they changed the name to "FAST Internet" on the bill.
I want to move my landline to Vonage or BasicTalk because the phone is much cheaper, but I run my business at home, and depend on Internet access and associated Fairpoint email.
Somewhere I read of people unbundling their phone from Internet and when the transfer order happens, they also lose their Internet.
So I want to avoid that from happening. I emailed Vonage, and they said to check if my Fairpoint Internet uses dry loop connection without home phone service.
Is there a way to find this out without contacting Fairpoint, because I imagine when I tell them I'm moving my phone, they'll just be a big pain in the ass and not helpful?
