[DSL] Fairpoint Internet (DSL)

Not sure if this was the correct place to post this but I'm hoping someone can help me out. I've been getting disconnected from the internet on a more frequent basis. Last week it dropped several times and stayed solid for a couple days. Last night it seems that it's reoccurring almost every 30 minutes. I've tried calling technical support but they have me do the same monotonous and useless routine of power cycling and renewing my IP. I live pretty far from the base so I don't know if that's why I keep getting disconnected or not. I play a browser game and that's pretty much all I do on here. Operating system is Win 7. I've had people tell me they would disconnect me and right after that I've been disconnected. I'm not sure if that's paranoia or they're actually doing it. I've grabbed a log from my modem/router (SmartRG SR350N) to see if someone could help me out. Here it is. Possible Union Strike

http://bangordailynews.com/2014/07/08/business/two-fairpoint-unions-raise-pressure-on-contract-negotiations-with-votes-to-ok-a-strike/ PORTLAND, Maine — FairPoint Communications and two unions representing about 2,000 workers exchanged sharp words Tuesday over talks to renew a contract set to expire Aug. 2. The unions on Tuesday scheduled votes to authorize a strike if unable to reach terms with the company.

Bad performance, port forwarding, and other problems.

I've several issues (as I sit here waiting for Fairpoint to even show up...) I had basic DSL (2 MB) with a static IP in a bridge configuration for many years. Worked. We host three domains on one IP, both web and email. This has worked for years. Recently I got pushed to upgrade our speed to either the 7 or 14 MB plan, and went with 7. Once this happened, things went downhill fast. First they changed that bridged connection (that worked wonderfully) to a PPPoE connection. The PPPoE has been unreliable, requires multiple logon attempts before it can connect (apparently my end does not see the static IP confirmation). The connection gets dropped about 4 to 6 times daily. Performance is horrible. To try to resolve the inability of PPPoE to connect Fairpoint basically forced me to use their Comtrend 5072 modem. I've done a lot of port forwarding configurations over the years and know what I'm doing, so I configured the Comtrend to forward web and email ports to the server. The server is receiving no traffic! It has been suggested to me that perhaps Fairpoint has modified the Comtrend to not forward ports. I can post the logs from the Comtrend if anyone is interested. Questions (sorry, this has been long): 1. Is there some way to get Fairpoint to restore this to the bridged connection I used to have? Whenever I talk to technical support, their response is either they don't understand or that it is already bridged. 2. Why doesn't the Comtrend's port forwarding work? Can anyone suggest a good DSL modem that will work with Fairpoint that works? 3. How can I get reasonable technical support from them?

outage for NH VT Me? for Fairpoint dsl?

I was told by FP tech dept that there is an outage for all 3 states. He told me they are working on fixing it. Doesn't know how long to fix it. Anyone hear about this or has the tech put me off. I called him because now for weeks my comtrend CBB3 has been crashing then restarting. I will have service for a while then it crashes. Sometimes every few minutes. Other times an hour or so in between.. Frustrating.. No cable so I'm stuck.

[service tier(s)] GPON Availability

Just got off the phone with Fairpoint re: GPON availability in Windham (Nashua service area I believe). Was quoted the following prices with 2 year contract, not sure if they are inclusive of the $5 "no landline phone" fee or not. 50/25 - $74.99 75/35 - $94.99 100/50 - $106.99 150/75 - $126.99 I'm trying to get them to move me on to GPON at my current 30/15 tier to see if it resolves my reliability issues before signing up for another 2 year term, but may have to go check out Comcast's 105 megabit tier for $59.99/mo if they can't do anything for me. It's a shame their prices aren't more competitive above the 30/15 tier.

[modem/router] Fairpoint GPON Information

TL;DR: HPNA instead of MOCA on coax. Throw away the Zyxel Router. If you hit a walled garden error message have tech support reset your PPPoE password. I've now been switched over to the GPON network to try and further troubleshoot my connectivity issues, while remaining on the 30/15 speed tier. New ONT is an Adtran 352H - a little physically smaller, but no fiber coil box on the back so all the slack had to be wound up the nearest pole. The associated battery/power supply unit is branded CyberPower, uses the same battery. They also brought a new router that is "required to use the GPON service", a Zyxel P873-HNUP. This steaming pile from 2011 has a gigabit WAN port, but only 100megabit LAN ports, so if you paid for the 150 megabit service - tough luck. Also both the new router and ONT are HomePNA devices instead of MOCA... so there's that. I don't know if they can coexist on the same coax, but it could cause issues with some tivo units if not. So I used my own router instead (Asus RT-AC66U), and while it functioned for a few hours with the "fairpoint/password" PPPoE username and password, it eventually locked me into a walled garden "for my security." This caused no lack of confusion for phone tech support who all said "you should only get error message if you're on DSL." Thanks to a few knowledgeable members of this forum and google search I knew the solution to the walled garden message is to have them change your password. Once I asked support to just pretend I'm on DSL and change my password, I was back online in seconds. The higher level resource that called me earlier today from one of the original escalations confirmed that the GPON PPPoE authenticates the same way/connects the same was as ADSL in the backend. Now it's just a waiting game to see if it drops again.. keeping my fingers crossed.

It's that time for FairPoint to have degraded performance.

I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed, but lately my service with FairPoint has been having a lot of problems. This has been a common occurrence once every few months usually lasting a few weeks at most. Basically the service is fine during the day, but severely degrades between 6PM-8PM and lasts until 6AM-8AM the next day. By degrades I mean a massive increase in ping/latency as well as a drop in overall download/upload speeds. Pings to sites like Google.com being 15-20ms during the day end up being 500ms+. My 15/5 "FAST" fiber optic connection goes from 15/5 to 1.5/0.5 and there is severe packet loss making me unable to do anything during the time when I am most active (evening, late night, very early morning). Anyone else getting this lately?

MPPPoE on Fairpoint DSL

I've asked Fairpoint and they say it's possible but they won't give you support for it, to setup MPPPoE for multilink. Given the HORRIBLE 3 Mbps (I'm on 105 meg Comcast at the moment and facing a massive downgrade in our move) I'm hoping to grab 4 lines from Fairpoint and use MPPPoE and bond the lines to get ~12 mb/sec. Anyone else had experience doing it?

Unable to upload and download at the same time

I am a FP customer and have an unresolved issue that has gone on for 2+ years now. The issue is that I cannot upload and download at the same time. My service is 768kb/s upload and 7Mb/s download. I have the router upload speed throttled at 600 kb/s but when doing an upload, my download speed to close to zero, making service unusable. I spent a solid 9 months with FP staff, who were unable to help. A friend of mine thinks it is a duplex issue. Everything was fine up until 2 years ago. Attached is a recent speed test when doing a file upload. I have screen shots going back to 2012 but FP is unable to help me or does not know what to do. I would leave FP but have no other options.

[connectivity] FairPoint Net EVERY NIGHT cuts out at exactly 10:30EST. why??

Subject pretty much explains it all. Have had the same issue since my FairPoint service was turned on about a month and a half ago. I have been on the phone with tech support multiple times and have been instructed to... 1)power cycle the modem (completed numerous times) 2)authenticate/sync modem (completed numerous times) Have also had techs visit my apartment who have given me an entirely new modem as well as switch the dsl "channel line" I was on...still no change. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what might be causing this issue. Some friends of mine have suggested that due to the consistent nature of the d/c (EACH night at 10:30 EST) it might be something to do with the host servers rebooting/refreshing. --(When I suggested this to the tech on the phone they had no knowledge of any such reboot/refresh. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. --Pazz

Rumor: FP to offer bonded ADSL2+ service soon

I was on a service call and was speaking with a FP line tech who I know somewhat well. He told me that FP is going to be rolling out bonded ADSL2+ service soon. Not sure what soon means. He saw paperwork at the office describing the service and probably also how to install it. I believe it will only be offered in towns where the CO is equipped with an Adtran TA5000 DSLAM. (same equipment used for their Ethernet over Copper service, if I am not mistaken) How one would figure out if they are served from a TA5000-equipped CO without asking a local tech, not sure.

I want to bridge the comtrend 5831u that fairpoint provided me with my own router (linksys with tomato) but the menu on the comtrend is frustrating and I'm not as savy with networking as I used to be. I couldn't find any manuals online for this particular model. Any help would be appreciated.

[trouble] Line repair timelines during the strike

So the last time I posted was in August when they switched me over to GPON, which was 100% stable until a tree branch snapped the aerial fiber to my house last week. They have promised me a resolution date of today, but so far no truck-roll. Has anyone actually gotten line serviced since the strike started, the comments on twitter and facebook of people being without service for a month are a little scary, i'm wondering how long until i cut my losses and just hop on the comcast life raft

FairPoint has a new routing carrier?

I've started noticing pretty horrible latency problems over the past week or so starting from around 4-5PM and lasting up until near 6-7AM in the morning the next day. I started noticing this due to the fact that websites such as Google take forever to load and my ping in games in just insane. So I decided to do a tracert against Google and behold I see a new routing carrier that I'm being routed through. I thought Cogent was bad, Zayo.com makes Cogent look amazing. 5 13 ms 14 ms 14 ms xe-3-2-0.mpr4.bos2.us.above.net [208.184.223.233] 6 70 ms 69 ms 81 ms ae2.mpr3.bos2.us.zip.zayo.com [64.125.25.41] 7 82 ms 77 ms 75 ms ae7.cr1.lga5.us.zip.zayo.com [64.125.21.226] 8 113 ms 99 ms 101 ms ae1.cr2.lga5.us.zip.zayo.com [64.125.29.38] 9 94 ms 89 ms 109 ms ae3.er4.lga5.us.zip.zayo.com [64.125.31.246] 10 89 ms 69 ms 61 ms 72.14.223.26 11 101 ms 103 ms 106 ms 209.85.248.178 12 73 ms 64 ms 71 ms 209.85.245.181 13 91 ms 89 ms 98 ms lga15s44-in-f1.1e100.net [74.125.226.65] Cogent routing problems only lasted from 8PM to about 1AM. This Zayo garbage starts causing problems in the late afternoon/very early evening at 4-5PM. Anyone else notice this?
