Is intermittency a modem/router issue or a Fairpoint issue?
For the last few months my fairpoint DSL connection has been intermittent. It usually works fine, but every hour or two (and sometimes more frequently) it goes our for a minute or two. It's most noticeable when streaming music but I notice on regular browsing as well.
I am sure the issue is not on my lan (when it goes down I can still ping devices fine, and my phones, which are voip on my lan to a gateway connected to the fairpoint pots connection, never go down).
This leaves as a possible culprit only my router/modem (a tp-link td-8840t) or the fairpoint DSL connection itself. I have tried rebooting the router/modem and power cycling it (many times!) and that has no impact. Is it worth my buying another adsl router/modem and trying that, or is this more likely a fairpoint DSL service issue?

It's that time of the month again. Has been a lot worse since the strike ended. This is the usual happenings in the evening starting at exactly 7PM (sometimes exactly 6PM). On 15/2 "FAST" fiber optics.

[modem/router] Why do I have to reboot my modem SO much?!
All right. I have no idea where to post this, so i figure since I've suspected this could link to a hardware issue to my PC, I feel it's proper to maybe bring it here because of that.
I keep my PC on 24/7, which may be unhealthy for the machine, may not be. I'm finding it frustrating every growing minute it happens when I can't load certain pages via internet. It forces me to have to reboot my whole PC sometimes for it to get connectivity. Sometimes, i've had to reboot my own DSL Modem so I could get internet connectivity.
I always know when I have to, when I get "Server Not Found" errors on sites like Google or that Thunderbird won't connect to the IMAP servers for my mail or that Steam cannot load it's store page, bringing back errors. That's when I have to reboot my DSL Modem, as well when I can't get to certain other pages.
I'll also know when the little internet icon shows the little caution triangle on it, that's when I have to reboot the whole machine to get internet back.
So, I'm thinking something is about to fail or is on the verge of failing. I highly suspect the onboard ethernet port, because I really doubt this could be a faulty cable. Otherwise, it wouldn't let me on.
FairPoint is my ISP and I've had them get me a new modem for free because I thought the modem I had before was too old (was an old Verizon Westell). Could it be possible that FairPoint is screwing with my connection which makes me reboot so much?
Any ideas?

[speed/latency] Here we go again...
Central Maine, static IP addresses, 25% packet loss since about 10:45 AM EDT 4/11. Non-static neighbors seem to be working fine.
Opened a ticket - may be up to two days to get it straightened out. Aggravating. when it works it's ok (3Mb/756kb dsl). Speed not great but as advertised. When something goes wrong it takes forever to get it straightened out. First level support is polite enough but doesn't appear to have the needed information for deeper issues.

[connectivity] Mac OS 10.6 and Comtrend router problems
I run this older OS because of some software that won't run on anything newer. Not to mention that it still works fine for me, and Apple, not Microsoft, seems more and more like the evil empire. At any rate, suddenly both my desktop and laptop started freezing up when I tried to connect to the internet. FairPoint technical support was no help, other than to suggest upgrading my OS. A hard-to-find posting on Apple support about a related issue said to go to System Preferences/Network/Ethernet/Advanced/TCP and turn off IPv6. This has solved the problem. The posting also said to turn off IPv6 in the router. I may do this to see if it improves performance. I called back FairPoint technical support to tell them about the fix, since they had seemed clueless. I got a different support person who told me that Premium Technical Support could help me - for a fee. Now I'm wondering if FairPoint didn't change their system settings somehow to disrupt peoples connections and try to bring in some additional money.

So Far So Good
Switched to Fairpoint from Comcast two months ago after many, many years with starting with Media One, then ATT, then Comcast). Not a big cable watcher and Comcast kept raising my internet-only prices despite having been a loyal customer for a very long time. Didn't want to play the pretend-to-leave-give-me-a-discount-game, and had been previously miffed when Comcast encrypted hidef basic cable "to bring me better service", so I thought I'd take a chance on Fairpoint since we had old Fios fiber in the street.
Although I find the customer facing web portals much less mature than Comcast's (more than one single portal with different passwords in some cases), I've been very happy with the speed and the responsiveness of technical support when I've had a question. I haven't had any outages yet that I've noticed. I do regular speed tests.
Everyone I've dealt with has been friendly (installers, customer support, and tech support), and in some instances have gone off to research answers for me and then gotten back to me with answers. Happy customer at this point.
Time will tell. In short I decided to not send my money to the behemoth for a bit, although depending upon what happens with Fairpoint financially in the long term, I may end up being dragged kicking and screaming back into the pit. :)

[trouble] Fairpoint DSL down for Readsboro, VT for three days
I have fixed IP DSL in Readsboro, VT on a dry-loop DSL line. It's been down for three days. It's a 1.5 hour drive to the property -- I know the power is on and it should be up... and I'm getting TRACEROUTE dropping in Albany, NY... So I think it's infrastructure and not my modem. Anybody else down in that area?

[modem/router] Help in getting a wireless router
Hi all. I'm a new subscriber to Fairpoint DSL. I have the Comtrend CT-5072T modem. I'm renting the modem from Fairpoint. I'd like to get a wireless router. Would it be best to rent from Fairpoint or buy? Any suggestions on the most reliable router to buy? Reliable and easy would be best. I'm new with all of this so any help would be great appreciated! Thanks!!

[modem/router] Fairpoint/Comtrend AR-5381U -- mysteriously reset?
Folks,
Two separate Comtrend AR-5381u routers, each associated with its own
Fairpoint account. Last week, I noticed that one had been reset. The
administrative password had been reset to its default value. I don't
watch this router carefully, so it could have happened anytime in the
last couple months. The owners of this unit did not trigger this
reset.
The second unit I do watch carefully. It was likewise mysteriously
reset just a couple days ago. The password was set back to the known
default value on this router. Additionally, this router had been in
bridge mode and had a set of MAC entries. After the reset, it was no
longer in bridge mode, and no MAC entries.
Are AR-5381U (or other) routers from Fairpoint (or elsewhere) getting
mysteriously reset?
Thank you.

FairPoint limits number of recipients in an e-mail
I have a small (42 member) distribution list that I occasionally send e-mail to via my FairPoint e-mail account. A few days ago I tried to send an e-mail to the group and received a response message from FairPoint's e-mail server with an SMTP error 553 (too many restricted recipients) for every e-mail address in the list. After wading through the usual set of clueless customer support reps who insisted I had an Outlook configuration problem I finally reached a supervisor who admitted that FairPoint had recently set a limit of 15 recipients per e-mail - something to do with getting FairPoint off a blacklist due to spam e-mails originating from some number of (likely) infected customer systems.
Just an FYI for anyone else who might encounter this issue and get misleading information from FairPoint CSRs.

[modem/router] Complex & Intermittent DNS Issue
I've been dealing with this issue with Fairpoint for several years. The Internet connection works for anywhere between 2-3 hours or days, then fails. I reboot the DSL modem (Comtrend AR-5381u) and it works again... until it fails. I tried enabling SRA for the line and also manually specifying DNS servers. When the internet goes down the link lights on the modem are still green, though a year ago they would turn red. Now, when it fails they remain green.
The problem used to be that the DSL modem would lose the PPPOE connection and drop, and a reboot would fix. They changed something on their end and the connection was solid for 9 months, and then the behavior returned.
This is the current failure mode: Devices like my AT&T microcell and Nest Camera continue to have connectivity, devices like laptops/ipads lose connectivity periodically. Reboot of DSL modem is needed to fix. Problem then returns within hours. I can ping discrete ip addresses from my laptop (8.8.8.8) but when I try to ping google.com it fails. So it would appear that there is a periodic DNS lookup failure.
If I flush the DNS cache on the laptop rather than rebooting the modem, this does not solve the problem. I have also tried specifying 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as the DNS servers in the modem firmware and that makes no difference at all - I really thought that would solve the problem.
Any idea what the next steps might be? It seems like the modem decides to start ignoring DNS requests or Fairpoint filters them out after a certain period of time. The connection is still active; I can ping an IP address but cannot get a DNS lookup after a certain period of time.
Thanks - all ideas are welcome here. Fairpoint thinks it is a line problem but I am convinced it is more complex than that.

[modem/router] Westell A90-750018-07 spontaneously reboots
I have discovered that these routers may intermittently reboot with UPNP devices on the network. The problem is reproducible. It seems that if an SSDP packet is broadcast (multicast actually) on the network that is bigger than 512 bytes that a process on the modem will crash. If the process crashes enough times, the router will reboot itself. The syslogs from the router looks like this:
09-10-2015 16:19:39 Daemon.Warning 192.168.1.199 /sbin/init[1]: nice -n 10 fireball restarted too often, modem will reboot now

09-10-2015 16:19:39 User.Warning 192.168.1.199 kernel: do_page_fault() #2: sending SIGSEGV to fireball for invalid read access from
I've tried disabling UPNP. Firmware is 5.01.01.01. Looks like a bug in the fireball application on the modem. I'm guessing they are using a fixed buffer size and not checking the length.
